Our school has successfully held the "International Workshop on Open Geographical Modeling and Simulation"

2017/08/18

The two-day International Workshop on Open Geographical Modeling and Simulation was held successfully at the Nanjing Normal University at Aug 17-18, 2017. The workshop was jointly organized by Key Laboratory of Virtual Geographic Environment (Ministry of Education of PRC), School of Geography Science-Nanjing Normal University and School of Geodesy and Geomatics-Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture; it was co-organized by International Society for Digital Earth, Jiangsu Center for Collaborative Innovation in Geographical Information Resource Development and Application, State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base of Geographical Environment Evolution (Jiangsu Province), Jiangsu Association for the Sciences of Remote sensing and Geographic information system, Jiangsu Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography and National Data Sharing and Service Platform for Earth System. Fourteen keynote speakers, including Prof. Daniel P. Ames (the president of the International Environmental Modelling & Software Society, Editor-in-chief of Environmental Modeling and Software), Prof. Anthony Jakeman (foundation and past president of International Environmental Modelling and Software Society, AGU Fellow), Prof. Alexey Voinov (former president of the International Environmental Modelling & Software Society), Dr. Quillon Harpham (chair of Executive Committee of the OpenMI Association), Dr. Albert Kettner (senior research scientist of Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System-CSDMS), Dr. Jonathan L. Goodall (Assistant Director of Link Lab, University of Virginia), Prof. Bin Wang (Tsinghua University, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China), Prof. Xia Li (Sun Yat-sen University, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, Yangtze River Scholars of Ministry of Education), Prof. Heping Sun (Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China), Prof. Xiangzheng Deng (Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resource Research, CAS, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China), Prof. Hengxing Lan (Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resource Research, CAS, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China) and Prof. Qiuhong Tang (Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resource Research, CAS, PI of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars of China), Dr. Hui Wu (East China Normal University, deputy director of State Key Laboratory for Estuarine and Coastal Research, East China Normal University), and Prof. Min Chen (Nanjing Normal University, PI of Thousand Talents program for Young Scholars of China, PI of NSF for Excellent Young Scholars of China), have given their keynote presentations during the conferences.

The opening ceremony of the conference was held in the Lecture Hall II in Xianlin Hotel on the morning of Aug.17th, chaired by Prof. A-xing Zhu, Director of Jiangsu Center for Collaborative Innovation in Geographical Information Resource Development and Application, Nanjing Normal University. After the opening, Prof. Daniel P. Ames, Prof. Anthony Jakeman, Prof. Bin Wang, Prof. Heping Sun, Dr. Hui Wu gave keynote presentations respectively on the topics of: Open Source GIS on the Web - Introducing A Comprehensive Python Based Package for Water Resources Web Apps, Challenges and Opportunities in Integrated Modelling of Socio-environmental Systems, Coupled Data Assimilation for Decadal Climate Prediction and Understanding the River-ocean Interactions by Numerical Modeling. In the afternoon of 17th, Prof. Alexey Voinov, Dr. Quillon Harpham, Prof. Xiangzheng Deng, Prof. Xia Li, Prof. Hengxing Lan, Prof. Qiuhong Tang and Prof. Min Chen gave their presentations on the topics of: Guided Coupling of Models: From Software to Stakeholders, Integrated Environmental Modelling – Vision and Building Blocks, Dynamic and Projection of the Structural Land Uses by Sectors in China, Geosimulation and Its Applications in China, Rockfall Process Modeling Using GIS and LiDAR, Coupled Human-Water Modeling for Climate Change Assessment, and Sharing and Developing Models for Geographic Analysis through Open Environments. In the 18th, started with Dr. Jonathan Goodall and Dr. Albert Kettner’ keynote presentations titled Cyberinfrastructure for Open Environmental Modeling and Towards a Modeling Framework for Simulating Earth Surface Processes, nearly twenty experts gave their speeches related on Modeling of Geographic World in Open Web Environment, Cooperation in Intergrating of Geo-analysis Models, Spatio-Temporal Modelling and Integration, Interoperability, Reusability, and Integrated Systems and Information Technology for Sharing and Integrating Geo-analysis Models. In the afternoon, Prof. Guonian Lv, the director of Key Laboratory of VGEs, chaired the Panel Discussion, and experts expressed their views around five themes, including Data of Supporting Model and Data Model, Sharing of Heterogeneous Geo-model in Network, Open Service Framework of Supporting Geographical Modeling and Simulation, the Processes and Pattern of Geographical Modeling and Simulation, Collaborative Running and Monitoring of Geographical Modeling in Cyberspace. After discussion, Prof. Guonian Lv also chaired the closing ceremony, and he summarized the content of the general assembly. The participators exchanged their experience, and expressed their expectation for potential cooperation. This conference builds a bridge between system developers of model sharing and integration and geography model builders, provides more chances for the communication among scholars around the world.
